About the Author
Kim Stafford is a writer and teacher living in Portland, Oregon. He is the founding director of the Northwest Writing Institute, a zone for exploratory writing at Lewis & Clark College. His books include Having Everything Right: Essays of Place (Sasquatch Books), The Muses Among Us: Eloquent Listening and other Pleasures of the Writer’s Craft (University of Georgia Press), A Thousand Friends of Rain: New & Selected Poems (Carnegie Mellon University Press), and Early Morning: Remembering My Father, William Stafford (Graywolf Press).

A warm memoir with great short stories

this book is more a collection of short stories and chapters that not only make up an entire book, but an entire lifetime. Kim Stafford's father casts a shadow as he was a famous poet, but Kim earned my respect and admiration after reading his truthful and honest reflection on his life and his brother's suicide. I was surprised MINI SPOILER ALERT that the suicide is mentioned early on in the book. It's almost as though Stafford wanted to address that early, get it out there, and then get into the process of sharing his and Bret's life and childhood. So often in cases of suicide, the death takes up more attention than the life, which is noticeably longer, and really more important.

beautifully written

A sensitive and thoughtful memoir, memories of another time. I read it all at one sitting. there are some questions about his brother's depression that led to suicide but the writer chose not to pry, to analyze, and in the end this was the better path I think. Highly recommended.
