The Art of Avengers: Age of Ultron

"Avengers: Age of Ultron: The Art of the Movie" is another very nice entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe art book series. It's not my favorite of the Marvel art books, but it touches on most of the things I wanted it to. There is a lot of high-quality color artwork. Like the previous hardcover books, this one comes in a nice slipcase that will help shield the book from everything from dust to drops.

The book mostly presents the art in chronological order as it appears in the film - starting with the Sokovia mission; then moving into Avengers HQ and the rise of Ultron; and finally concluding with the film's climactic action sequences. The primary focus of the book is on the characters - in particular, the new characters Ultron and the Vision. Of the existing characters, Iron Man gets the most pages (to be expected given the popularity of that character and the fact that he is always upgrading his suits/armor). The designs of locations, weapons, vehicles, etc. do get some space in the book, but not as much as I would have liked.

I also wish there was more early artwork - that is, early concept sketches, storyboards, alternate artwork, etc. Those types of art do appear, but the vast majority of the art in the book is finished color artwork. That's great, but as someone who likes to see how the designs developed over time, I was left slightly disappointed.

The book also includes a one-page foreword by Joss Whedon. Overall, it's a worthy purchase if you are a fan of "Age of Ultron" and are curious about the design process.

Great artbook

This is the official book for the second Avengers film Age of Ultron The other one, The Road to Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron: The Art of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a rehash of artworks from other Marvel movie artbooks.

Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron: The Art of the Movie is a 336-page hardcover artbook that comes with a slipcase. So far, most of the Marvel artbooks are the slipcase edition and this one looks great as well.

There are plenty of character designs to look at. Most of the main Avengers designs are on updates to their costumes.

The highlights for the book are the artworks for Hulkbuster, Ultron and Vision. There are so many pages of concept art for those three it's almost shocking. The art is fantastic. Ultron is scary-looking for all the designs in the book. Vision looks so alien and mysterious. Just amazing. And if you thought the Hulkbuster in the movie was cool, you have to check out the many iteration that weren't even used. Some versions of the Hulkbuster reminded me of the animation-style Juggernaut from the X-men.

The rest of the art are of the environment, props and storyboards. You'll get to see the fortress that appeared at the start of the film, the floating "island", Hawkeye's arrows, interiors for the new Avengers HQ and other buildings, and more. Commentary is provided for most pieces of art.

This is an incredible artbook. Most highly recommended. Really worth the money.

I think it's one of the best Marvel movie artbooks so far.

STUNNING CONCEPT ART!

I have collected a lot of "Art of the Movie" type books over the years, and this one is definitely in my top ten. It is well organized and concise with great concept art and decent commentary. While less extensive in art content than other similar books, The Avengers: Age of Ultron: Art of the Movie contains everything designed that is crucial to the movie. The art quality is also stunning, and many of the costume designs are on photo-realistic paintings of the actors; allowing you to grasp their applications to the movie very easily. The design art for Ultron in particular is absolutely gorgeous. All in all this is a great pick for fans who like "Behind the Scenes" books.

The book begins with a Prologue that emphasizes Secretary Christopher’s long-standing interest in speeches as an instrument of public policy and the decision making behind this often overlooked aspect of statecraft. It also describes how the Secretary was offered the position by President-elect Clinton, the state of affairs as he found them when he took office, and his strategy and plans for U.S. foreign policy in the post-Cold War period. An epilogue recounts the Secretary’s decision to return to private life, offers his insights on the challenges facing the United States in the international arena in the years ahead, and sets forth some suggestions for future policy makers.

Above all, this book provides ample evidence that the author took seriously the advice that United States Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas gave him when he served as the justice’s law clerk in the 1949 term: “Get out in the stream of history, and swim as fast as you can.”

Brief headnotes typically describe what overt statements Christopher's speechwriters included or discarded, or what tacit signals the speeches attempted to convey to the intended audience, whether foreign leaders or domestic bureaucracies. Though none are especially memorable, Christopher's declamations do provide a sober record of substantive changes in post^-cold war foreign affairs. If not as colorful as the memoirs of Kissinger, or as gossipy as those of Baker, the headnotes to Christopher's speeches reflect the author's hallmark of polite, analytic emollience when he recollects China's political truculence and commercial pirating, Bosnia's destruction, the Israeli/Palestinian negotiations, repeated Iraqi fire drills, or the atom bomb's proliferation. Within its design as an anthology, this material could be chewed over by serious students of recent foreign policy, whereas as connoisseurs of political memoirs would be less thrilled with their meal. Good content - different style

The content of In the Stream of History is excellent - but one may find the style of the book awkward. It is based on speeches given by Warren Christopher - so the speeches (as they were given) and insight into their preparations are given - which is an excellent contribution to foreign policy practices, but makes for a difficult read. Reading a speech and hearing a speech at the moment of their importance are obviously two different things.

An invaluable resource

I'm very impressed with this grammar. Morwood makes no claims that he is replacing Smyth's grammar for breadth. Instead, the Oxford Grammar of Classical Greek sets out in a very consise and clear manner various paradigms and rules. I particularly appreciate the VERY good verb section - not only providing paradigms for the regular conjugations and types of verbs, but also giving the principle parts of the 100 most common irregular verbs. For someone (like myself) who can never seem to remember all of the irregular verbs that seem to pop up in translations FAR too often, this grammar will become a favorite resource. My only complaint -- I'm sure that my grammar skills have declined as a result of relying upon this book rather than my memory during translations.

A good beginners/intermediate guide to greek grammar

A well set out book of ancient greek grammar. Contains most necessary paradigms, and also a lot about various grammatical constructions. Because of its limited size, it does not go into much detail with the grammar points but for someone starting or continuing on with Ancient Greek (inc NT Greek) this is a very handy reference to have. Also contains some useful appendices and an extremely limited Greek-English, English-Greek dictionary. This book is a lot easier to understand than a lot of the old books, eg. Goodwin, Smyth. Also a lot cheaper here than what I paid for it (although shipping to Oz would have cost a bit).

A good quick reference

After many years of just using Smyth's grammar, I decided to take a look at other texts. This is a good book and the author outlines its limitations at the outset. With this text you have the basic tools at your disposal but there is something to be said for the context in which Smyth put things. I am still getting used to the format and those of us who learned Greek the old way may never get used to the absence of more scholarly material and references. No question about the fact that if you have Smyth you will default to it most of the time. But if you are travelling or need a quick and dirty answer, this is the way to go.

David Morin is Lecturer on Physics at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics from Harvard in 1996. When not writing physics limericks or thinking of new problems whose answers involve e or the golden ratio, he can be found running along the Charles River or hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Diabolical problems

The title is somewhat of a misnomer: this book would not serve as an appropriate introduction to classical mechanics. It is not at the same level as Halliday, Resnick, Walker or Serway; it's more advanced and seems to assume one has already completed a mechanics course taught from one of those books.

The heart of this book is the problems and exercises at the end of each chapter. They are extremely clever. The author rates them by difficulty and provides full solutions with insightful commentary for about half of them. The hardest one are RIDICULOUSLY hard.

If you're addicted to problem-solving or are a physics professor in search of new tortures, this is an excellent resource. If you are actually looking to learn about topics like Lagrangians or Special Relativity, this might not be the best stand alone text. However, its footnotes and commentary accompanying the problems cast a lot of light on aspects of these topics you may not have considered.

The following I would like to not go unsaid about this book:

1) The prose is casual and clever.
2) Surprisingly: the disarming prose does not compromise the organization of the principles and material, as I feel Griffiths' texts unfortunately do.
3) Speaking of Griffiths: Morin's problems are just as inviting of creativity (as Griffiths: the principle strength, I feel, of his texts) and encourage real "thinking outside the box" as Griffiths. They are challenging and provoke deep thought, drawing forth the depths of the reader's creativity.
4) The unique addition of physics-limericks: I find them strolling into my mind while poring over a difficult problem. They are funny (or annoying if you are looking for The Way To the Answer amidst equation-jungles (Morin's text does not appear to me as an uninformative equation-jungle)). They actually help reinforce the principles well, and succinctly describe some profound physical-principles.
5) The inclusion of problem-solving advice, and good habits to get into if you want to be a physicist. On that note: I recommend a read of this text even if you've thoroughly-completed your classical mechanics sequence. Morin encourages checking of the limiting case, examining your solution, etc., and other habits that are "in the spirit" of physics.

Conclusion: this text is rich, fun to read, inviting of creativity, brimming with clever and informative prose, and will help you be a better physicist. Best of all: plenty of good physics-habits are taught by this book that are beyond the scope of classical mechanics. My heartfelt recommendation.

A very good text on mechanics-lots of interesting solved problems

This is a very good text on mechanics. It assumes that the reader has already been exposed to elementary mechanics,e.g,Halliday & Resnick.
The real strength of this book lies in its many solved problems. Many interesting generalizations and limiting cases are discussed, more so than any other mechanics text that I know.

A must read but only if you are older-best book I have ever read in dealing with life, thrift, work, opposite sex.
I keep it as a reference..Not much has changed in our society since this book was written 140 years ago.
Don't let the title to the book turn you away from this read. In the top 2 or 3 books I have ever read about life. Great book.
