I LOVE IT!!!!! Holly Black is back with another amazing fairytale. (Doing girl squeals)
I have so many feels and I want to say so much about how much I love this book. However, I do not like to write a review with spoilers and I truly don't know how I am going to praise this book and do it any kind of justice.
I want to start off by saying that I love how Holly didn't stick to traditional roles. You know what I mean, boys are soldiers and girls are princesses and all that other non-sense. People are figuring out more and more that people have the right and are capable of being anything they want and Holly has put that on the page. Hazel is the fighter, the knight, the one who defends people. Ben is the artiest that is kind of sensitive and is good to people. That was just one example the type of roles people get to play in this book.
I also love the relationship between Hazel and her brother, Ben. They are extremely close, like best friends and they look out for one-another. They didn't have a horrible family life, but it wasn't that great and they got each other through it. They also wanted to protect the other so much that they lied and held secrets from one-another as well, but didn't begrudge the other person when the truth came out, it was all about pure love.
The plot to The Darkest Part was not something that I expected and it was fantastic. I am the type of person who generally sees where are story might be headed or I have general idea of whats going on. There are occasions when I have no idea what is going to happen next and that is what happened with this book. I was reading and trying figure things out because so much was going on and so much could happen. The story could have gone anyway and Holly kept me on my toes. I was son engrossed into the story and the feeling of the story, I loved it.
Pros: The entire book.
Cons: Absolutely nothing.

Love the Darker Fae!! Truly enchanting story

This is a story about the darker faeries. It reminds me of Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely faeries. Capable of love and goodness, but tending toward their dark side, manipulating people and doing truly awful things. It's dark, almost gothic, but not set in a house rather a town, and the darkest part of the forest. It is a place that can be familiar and foreign in an instant and both Hazel and her brother Ben have spent their childhood there fighting the evil creatures that do evil things. But then they left.
The story starts with grown versions of Hazel and Ben and winds itself back to their childhood. It isn't a pretty journey, in the woods, nor at home. But Hazel and Ben make the best of things and find their happiness in the stories they weave about the boy in the glass coffin, the boy they both love. I can understand escaping into stories, especially fantasy. But their faeries are real.
Fairfold is interesting, reminding me of a Southern town that sweeps the ugly bits behind closed doors. Keeps it's secrets so that the tourists don't hear the stories, or if they do, they don't seem to care enough to stop visiting the boy in the forest. The town makes a lot of business off of the tourists. The faeries are good for business so they never say a word about the changeling boy that lives with his brother, the one the faeries tried to steal. They never mind leaving milk and other gifts out for the faeries until someone breaks the boy out of the coffin. Until the attacks on the locals begin.
I love the way Holly Black takes a simple story, a family story, and explores it on several different levels. The relationship between siblings, brother and sister, brother and brother, the relationship between parent and child- mother and children, father and children, and family.
Hazel is the narrator and she is no girl to be rescued. She is smart, brave, and loyal. Hazel loves her brother and Fairfold enough to sacrifice herself if need be. She reminded me very much of the character in BEWARE THE WILD BY NATALIE PARKER, another girl that loved her brother so much, she went into a swamp to save her brother. This novel was just as atmospheric and held me spellbound as I read.
It was refreshing to see a LGBT character or more that were just characters, complete characters, no stereotyping. So don't think of this as an issue book. It isn't. Imagine, a book with diverse characters and it isn't an issue book. How lovely!
I highly recommend this novel to lovers of faerie tales, romances, family stories, This is a great story with a lot of action, a lot of unique fae, and some interesting retellings of old stories. Holly Black includes some of her sources in the back and an interesting list of authors in her acknowledgements. There is some violence in the novel, not gratuitous but this is the fae in what some would call their truer form. They are teens so the usual teen shenanigans happening as far as drinking and thoughts about sex.

Awesome Fae/Fairies

As my first book about Fae/Fairies, all I have to say is that anything that comes next will have to work hard to surpass how much I loved this one. It was amazing! I loved that it was also a standalone because I got everything I wanted for the story in one installment. No cliffhangers, no waiting for the next book to come out. It wrapped up so beautifully. Holly Black's writing style is great, the way she explained everything, the plot line.Although the beginning was a little slow, the pace picks up as soon as we meet all the characters and the world, I mean I'm happy to have pre-ordered this book because it was just so amazing.I loved the relationships that were built in the one. I loved Ben, I loved that he was gay and open about it, I loved that the author touched upon this and how his story pans out. I mean its just amazing. I also loved Hazel, and how she is seen in the book as almost being the girl who hooks up with everyone but then you know has her great ending. I mean I just really enjoyed this book. Definitely recommend it.
