Falls short, not descriptive or specific enough
By L. Lawrence
The ideas presented in this book are good, but the instructions are missing things that will impede weight loss for all but the most obese person. The author ignores the fact that calories count. For example the instructions allow for an unlimited amount of fruit. Well, if I wanted to eat 10 bananas a day, on top of the allowed 2 cups of rice, one cup of oatmeal (also doesn't specify if these are cooked or uncooked portions although I clearly understand they are cooked some people might not) that would be problematic for weight loss. I might even gain weight. He also doesn't specify at all amounts of beans lentils etc which are certainly healthy but large quantities again could be problematic. Phase 2 is a nightmare because you are allowed the same unlimited fruit and veg and beans and 2 cups of rice and 1 cup of oatmeal PLUS a cup of cereal 4 Oz of meat or fish 2tbsp of oil. The author does state that these are maximums and that you should only eat to satisfaction not try to stuff yourself, however if I were hungry and ate all of what is allowed, because I only have 25 pounds to lose, I would not be in enough of a deficit calorie wise to actually lose weight. Being an (unfortunately) seasoned dieter, I know this, however I believe that this book just doesn't go into enough detail about what it takes to lose weight at different weight points. An obese person could probably lose weight quite steadily with this plan, someone who is just mildly overweight would need to eat less than is allowed. This issue really needs to be addressed.

FROM 143 TO 123 LBS IN 6 WKS
By C. Evans
I thought this book was wonderful. For the past few years I have been trying to lose some weight. I didn't have a lot to lose. (Only 10 -15 pounds.) Well, I've tried diet after diet and nothing seemed to work. I heard Dr. Smith on the Tom Joyner Morning show one day and I heard him talking about this book. So that very day I went out and purchased it. It was the best thing I ever did.

Phase 1
Detox. I lost 9 pounds. The detox phase lasts 9 days and it's not really that hard you just have to stay focused. I followed everything recommendation. I was never hungry, but I did lose energy. I went to bed early every night. I did cheat after my 9 days were up. I had such a craving for Chinese food. I thought I was going to eat everything, but I didn't even finish my plate and it wasn't as tasty as I thought it would be.

Phase 2
I just completed week 1 of phase 2 and I'm down another 3 pounds. I can now get my jeans past my thighs...LOL

Last week of Phase 2 (UPDATE)

Well, I hit a snafu. Last week, I got braces on my teeth. (Ughh) My mouth was so sore I barely ate anything all week. I ate a lot of things that weren't on the list like tomato soup, mac n' cheese and mashed potatoes. Last week I only lost 1 additional pound. So it is true when he says YOU HAVE TO EAT TO LOSE THE WEIGHT.

Now that I'm back on track I had to end the diet early. I lost 3 pounds for the 3 weeks in Phase 2. I've bypassed my goal. Thanks Dr. Ian Smith.

This one really works... and in the right way.
By Suzi
The first time I went on a diet, I was 9 years old. I've done them all, mostly successfully, in the short term. The problem is...I always end up putting the pounds back on. I've never been very over weight, but I have a tendency to pack on those 10-15 extra pounds. I love delicious food.

Two months ago, I was feeling very bad about myself, as I was at the high end of my weight spectrum, and happened upon this book. I actually looked at all of Dr. Smith's books and decided this one was the right one for me. The Extreme Fat Smash looked too harsh.

I have now lost 10 lbs. and I feel great. I'm exactly where I want to be. And...I didn't starve myself (my usual diet plan). My hair, which usually starts falling out when I diet, is intact and full. My complexion has cleared. I have lots of energy. It's wonderful. I have learned to eat in a new way.

The diet in this book is nothing I haven't heard before - eat lots of little meals, stay away from fast food, don't overdo the meat, no sweets, etc., but what I really liked about it was that it outlined very clearly what foods to eat and what foods not to eat. I need this kind of structure. It's simple and healthy and it works. What more could you want?

By the way, I did cheat in a few small ways. We are all human. I did not give up coffee, which is important to me. I would have the occasional glass of wine (once a week or so) before it was actually allowed in Phase III, and I would have a piece of chocolate here or there. For the most part though, I stuck to it, and I will keep it up because I really like eating this way.

One concept that Dr. Smith mentions in the book always sticks with me. He says, "cheating is a choice." You have to choose not to do it. Trust me, it feels a lot better to eat salmon sashimi and seaweed salad for lunch and saunter out of the restaurant in your skinny jeans than to shuffle out with a belly full of rueben sandwich and french fries in your fat jeans. Do this diet and you'll see what I mean. And good luck! :)
