Review
"Wonderful selections! Very thorough. I like this text best of the ones I have seen."--Paul Sheneman, Belhaven College
"A rich selection--full of further examples of practically every point I wish to nudge my students toward. I have used the book often since it first appeared."--William P. Keen, Washington and Jefferson College
"I have ordered this book as the text for my course [on] the Renaissance World. I don't think it has a viable competition: Norton's 'The Golden Hind' is not as good and costs twice as much in hardback, and it doesn't have Spenser's Mutability Cantos. I realize this has been around for a while, but keep it in print."--Harry Keyishian, Farleigh Dickinson University
"Very wide range of coverage."--Joyce G. MacDonald, University of Kentucky
"Comprehensive....The best anthology I know of."--Jim Kerbaugh, Illinois College
"One of the few remaining comprehensive anthologies of English Rennaissance literature available at a reasonable price. The editorial matter is sound and authoritative; the selections are both wide-ranging and well chosen; and the pictures and illustrations are delightful."--John B. Brooks, University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh
"Very fine anthology.... The reprints are wonderful."-- Michael L. Storex, College of Notre Dame, Baltimore
"This book amply replaces the old Rollins text for Renaissance classes. It is full enough that it can be used without supplements except for drama."--Richard B. Weir, The King's College

A standard of excellence.

I love this whole series, but especially this anthology produced by Hollander and Kermode. As a literature teacher, I find it great that this work is still available for purchase. You get a lot in this volume.
You get whole cuttings of books of the Farie Queene. You get the Mutabilitie Cantos. You get the Spencer, Sidney, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, Donne, Wyatt, Milton and others. There is a great area of pictures explaining the worldview of these authors. The chart of the Ptolemaic universe shows how important the budding empiricism of the Renaissance changed the world. The prose sections are just as well provided as the various translations of the Bible into English.
If you read this book, or have it assigned to you in a class, it will clue you into the renaissance. You will have a deeper understanding and an appreciation for those who have gone before. I use this book in my preparation for teaching literature. The footnotes are helpful and easy to read. I highly recommend this anthology almost above any others.

High quality contents, low quality product
By HH
Predictably, the best entries in this volume are the complete versions of Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus" and Shakespeare's "The Tempest". It is most interesting to compare "Dr. Faustus" to Goethe's "Faust", particularly the variations in storytelling. Where as Goethe presented a Faust that was really more of a pawn and subject to the temptations of the devil, Marlowe's Faustus seeks the devil himself. As for "The Tempest", I've raved about it in a previous review. The scenes with Miranda and Ferdinand are the best -- over-the-top romance! They fall in love so quickly and so hard.
Unfortunately, no one entry in this volume will help the reader understand alchemy any better beyond seeing how present it was in Renaissance lit. Hollander and Kermode would have done well to elaborate on this and help readers get a better understanding on the ancient tradition of alchemy. As for the product, Oxford U.P. needs to be seriously reconsider its approach to these "jam-everything-from-a-period-into-one-volume" anthologies. Oxford's current approach is to use thin parchment like that frequently used in canonical texts, but this material can't be written on without destroying the pages. Moreover, the consequence of jamming 1000+ thin pages into a book is to create weakened binding. Indeed, if one cracks the spine of this volume, one risks breaking the book in half!

Interesting... but...
By James F. E. Olmsted
I got this as a text book for a literature class. As the teacher said it's a great book, and well edited... but... one little problem... the book contains NO female authors apparently. This is, in my opinion, a little bit of a failure on its part by far. It's also quite dry at times and lacks a bit of luster.
